To reach Hogans, without driving the wrong way up a oneway street, your have to drive up Findley Street, from either end, or up Minton Street.
For a map of the one way system click here
But, since they build the new Sports Village, Parsonage Shopping Centre, and 24 hour ASDA on the bypass, it now has more traffic, more traffic islands and more sets of traffic lights than the old main road through the centre of Leigh (now renumbered B5215).
Or you can come from the M56 J9 [Winwick junction] via the A49 over the M6 at J22 [Winwick junction] and up the A579 [Winwick Lane] to Lane Head and turn right and arrive at Lowton
Either way at Lowton you can use either (a) the A580 East to the next junction (a set of traffic with a left feed into the start of the A579 [Atherleigh Bypass].
Or the A572 [St Helens Road].
Either way you arrive at a junction A572 [St Helens Road] and A579 [Atherleigh Bypass] with Leigh Fire Station adjacent. At this point you should take the A579 [Atherleigh Bypass]. Either straight on (if already on the bypass), or left if approaching on the A572 [St Helens Road].
You will cross a small roundabout for the Leigh Sports Village then clime a hill to go over the Leeds and Liverpool canal, as you drop down from the canal crossing you will see the Sainsbury's roundabout before you in all its glory. It is at the point where the A579 [Atherleigh Bypass] crosses the A578 [Twist Lane].
Once at the "the Sainsbury's roundabout" coming from the South refer to [*] If you successfully negotiate this turn you will pass the Railway Pub on your right. If you miss the left turn you will pass the Railway pub on your left. If this happens return to the start and begin again.
You could ask a local for directions, but they are likely to say (a) that they would not start from here or (b) they would walk.
***Once you have survived the Sainsbury's roundabout the rest is simple. You should be in Findley Street see Map, you need only drive down Findley Street to the compulsory right turn at the end in to Railway Road and Hogan is on your right hand side :-).
Now, wasn't that easy? :-!
Note: the below directions are for a one way system, Railway road is one way and Hogan's is at one end of it, with the one way flow travelling from that end to the other, and if you come on to railway road down any other road than Findley Street you will not be able to reach Hogan's. If you take a wrong turning you will not be able to turn round and retrace your steps. You might, if you are very lucky, be able to travel in a circle to come back to the point where you made the mistake.
From Leigh Road [B5215] which passes through the centre of Leigh (the old St.Helens to Bolton Road). Either (a) while traveling North on Leigh Road, turn left down St Mary's Way [not possible if you are travelling South], the Library and Town Hall on your left and St.Mary's Parish Church on your right. Please bear in mind that the left hand lane, here on Leigh Road, is a part time bus lane, and may, or may not, be available to you, depending on the day of the week and the time of day. Also some drivers ignore the bus lanes and if you are observing them, they may be passing you on the left when you try to turn left.
Then turn right at the end of St.Mary's Way, into Bengal Street, then follow the road round to the left into Walmesley Road, taking great care as you negotiate the 20mph zone, the speed bumps and the parked cars, now take the next right into Eyet Street, keeping Sacred Heart Church on your right hand side. At the bottom of Eyet Street turn left into Windermere Road. Then see [%] below.
Or (b) take the turn off Leigh Road [B5215], which is opposite the Thomas Burke Wetherspoon's Public House WN7 1QR, into Vicarage Square, passing Netto to the left and Superbowl to the right. Follow the road to the left and up, then turn right into Walmesley Road, take the next right into Eyet Street, keeping Sacred Heart Church on your right hand side. At the bottom of Eyet Street turn left into Windermere Road. Then see [%] below.
Or (c) take the turn off Leigh Road [B5215] into Windermere Road (with the Job Centre Plus on the corner). % follow Windermere Road for as far as you can, taking great care as you negotiate the 20mph zone, the bends in the road, and the speed bumps and the parked cars. You will eventually reach a point where straight ahead is a 'no through road', leading to Windermere Grove. At this point take the only option available and turn left into Coniston Street. At the next junction (Walmesley Road) turn right, then follow the road round to the left (part of Leigh College being on the right) into Findley Street. You will come to Railway Road, and your only option will be to turn left. Do so and Hogan's is on your right.
See, I told you that the first one was the easy way.
Just up Railway Road from Hogan's, on the opposite (left hand) side is a small car free park (between Langdale and Eyet Streets). You can turn into it from Railway Road on either Langdale or Eyet Street, but you can not drive from it back onto Railway Road. Nor can you reach it except from Railway Road. There is parking on Railway Road, but it is time limited Monday to Saturday.
